For a blind or low vision person, distinguishing between common household items that are shaped the same but have different contents is a significant ongoing issue. For example, when hunting through the pantry, how do you tell the difference between the tomato soup and the cream of mushroom soup, the peaches and the pears? How do you keep track of your different DVD's, or the array of artists in your CD collection? How do you know which prescription medicine you are taking, and what the instructions are? With sight, these issues are addressed without much thought, but for blind and low vision people, figuring out dilemmas like these is a day to day hassle. We are excited to bring you a wonderful solution to this problem - the PenFriend, developed by RNIB (the Royal National Institute of Blind People in the UK). The PenFriend is a cool gizmo that allows you to put a small sticker label on most anything. Then you touch the tip of the PenFriend to the sticker, press a button, and record your spoken description of that item. From then on, you can touch the tip of the PenFriend to the label, and hear your own words telling you what it is. No more wondering if you grabbed a Diet Coke or a 7 Up or whether the cake mix you're about to open is chocolate or yellow; no more having to start each DVD in the player to know what movie it is. You can label important papers to keep them straight so that you know which one is the list to take to the grocery store and which is the list of medications to show the doctor. It's even possible to make a day-timer by starting each page with a date label, and then adding labels with your different appointments. Only your imagination of how and where you can use the PenFriend to identify things in your life is the limit.
